India currently possesses an abundance of skill in both fast bowling and spin bowling, which has helped them become one of the most powerful teams in the world in Test cricket in recent years.
While Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav would almost certainly have been assured a position in the playing eleven of other Test-playing nations, they struggle to find a space in the Indian red-ball system.
Yuzvendra Chahal is another bowler who is regarded as one of the greatest in the world in limited-overs cricket but has yet to make his Test debut for India. The 31-year-old has 104 wickets in 61 ODIs and is India’s all-time leading wicket-taker in T20Is.
The two spinners who are regulars in Indian teams across formats, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, are Test match regulars.
Speaking about his dream to play for the Indian Test team, Chahal said,
Chahal, though, hasn’t played in a first-class match since December 2018. Chahal is the leading wicket-taker in the 2022 Indian Premier League, having taken 24 wickets in 13 matches for the Rajasthan Royals so far.
The Indian Test team under Virat Kohli in the past did not try out many spinners in Test Cricket as the likes of Ashwin and Jadeja never went out of form. In fact, both these spinners became the backbone of the Indian Test team which was world no. 1 for more than 4 years.
The likes of Jayant Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Washinton Sundar, and Axar Patel only got opportunities when one of these two spinners was absent or the team wanted to play three spinners in the XI.
Chahal for the test team? Stranger things have happened in the past.
